2008 CORRE Position Paper

Nominations for CORRE Board Members

Terms of several Board members will expire December 31, 2008, and nominations will be accepted beginning April 1, with a deadline of June 1. If you would like to nominate a retiree, please send a very brief summary of the person’s work experience to Lou Dunlap, Chair, Nominating Committee, at loudunlapl@comcast.net or mail to 116 Clark Lane, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. A nominee must have agreed to serve, and must be a member of CORRE.

CORRE’s Bylaws were revised in December 2007, and nominations from the floor at Annual Meetings will not be allowed. Instead, nomination by petition is now possible.

If you are a retiree who has not been chosen by the Nominating Committee by August 1 (names chosen will be posted on the website) and you still wish to be nominated, you may do so by obtaining the names of 30 CORRE Active Members on a Petition for Nomination and submitting it by September 1 to the Nominating Committee Chair as shown above. Copies of the Petition for Nomination are available on this website.

Active Members are those who have contributed at least $20. A list is on this website.

What's wrong with this picture?

For years, DOE has denied pension adjustments to help retirees with inflation even though the fund surplus is more than enough to pay for needed increases.

Let your congressmen, the DOE and company executives know that you expected better than this treatment.

Adjustments for retirees less and less frequest.

DOE and its contractors in Oak Ridge have apparently abandoned the practice of granting adjustments, as was expected from the practice of Union Carbide which set up the pension program in Oak Ridge.

Oak Ridge has been cheated for over 20 years by DOE because it has not made any appropriated addition to the pension plan. Let your Congressmen know that you expect Tennesseans to be treated better than this.

By denying pension adjustments DOE has assured that they have not had to make a contribution to the Oak Ridge retirement fund for over 22 years. And yet they routinely make contributions of 9 - 10% of payroll for retirement programs at some other sites in other states. Is this a fair and equitable? Of course not! It is systematic discrimination!

DOE Contractor retirees in Oak Ridge, TN still have one of the poorest defined-benefit pension plans in the DOE Complex.

FACT

Current practice in Oak Ridge is to not use fund surplus (of nearly $600,000,000) to grant retirees adjustments, but to use the fund surplus to pay for, and improve, the pensions of all workers hired since 1984, for whom the DOE has not made a contribution from its budget since 1984.

FACT

DOE routinely makes substantial contributions to pensions at DOE sites in other states of 9-10 % of salary.

FACT

Retirees have sustained very serious inflation losses in their pensions while facing huge increases in their medical insurance premiums.

CONCLUSION

DOE and the Contractors need a more balanced view. On the basis of moral, ethical and equity considerations, the employees and the retirees both have rights to the surpluses of the fund. Adjustments are more than justified.
