1. Opening Remarks.
President Dave Reichle stated that a few months ago the Board gave him
a mission, and he has since made 15 presentations and attended 17
meetings. Included were talks at the Harriman and Oak Ridge
Rotary Clubs and a briefing to the Anderson County Commission
Subcommittee on DOE Revenue. He has now approached several
members of Kingston City Council for a Resolution , and two people are
working on that. We need to get a Resolution from Knoxville City
Council. Charlie Kuykendall went to that Council several weeks
ago and left an example Resolution, and he needs to follow up on
that. Reports of other meetings follow, and a meeting with Thom
Mason, Director of ORNL, is expected soon.
2. Meeting with Gerald Boyd, Manager, DOE-ORO.
Reichle, Joe Setaro, and Dub Shults, met at ORO with Gerald Boyd,
Robert Brown, and Dan Wilkins on August 29. The meeting was
very cordial. We gave them a copy of our 2007 CORRE Position
Paper, and reminded them that our goals are the same as for the last
three years.
3. Meeting with Ted Sherry, Manager, NNSA Site Office, Y-12.
Reichle and Bob Worrell met at Y-12 on August 31 with Ted Sherry and
Sam Gains. He was very receptive and cordial, seemed up to date
and understanding of our issues, and seemed perhaps sympathetic.
Reichle noted that Y-12 is basically reporting to the Albuquerque
Operations Office now.
4. Meeting with George Dials, President, BWXT Y-12.
Reichle and Bob Worrell met with George Dials and Debbie Schecterly on
September 12. The agenda was the same as at the meetings with
Boyd and Sherry, and we had the same warm reception. Dials seems
to have been made fully aware of our issues in the short time he has
been here. At all of our meetings, we were essentially told that
probably nothing will be done about our requests under after the 2008
elections.
5. Nominating Committee.
Bob Worrell reported that Sandy Dean has agreed to serve another
two-year term as a regular member of the Board (not Communications),
thus filling the last slot on the slate of nominees. Motion
passed to approve her nomination.
6. Treasurer’s Report.
Paula Wright highlighted her report, copies of which had been
distributed. There were 3 new Active Members in July, and balance
on hand at end of July was $39,084.06. In answer to a question
that had been raised earlier, Don Wood stated that contributions to
CORRE should not be claimed as deductions on income tax returns.
7. ORNL Benefits Advisory Committee.
Joe Setaro reported that the Committee met on Monday, September
17. He said ORNL is doing what they can to reduce medical
expenses for active employees by means of a “Wellness
Program.”
8. Government Relations Committee.
Pete Lotts reported that members of the Committee have been in contract
with congressional staff, with emphasis on responses to our invitations
to attend our CORRE Annual Meeting. We know that we can’t
expect any legislators to attend, but still hope for representation
from their offices.
9. Communications
– Annual Meeting Planning. Sandy Dean gave an update on
final planning for the Annual Meeting. She reported that an issue
of Retiree News is about to come out, but she thinks it will not be
received before the meeting. She referred to news releases that
she has sent to area newspapers, and said that Marty Goolsby will be in
touch with Oak Ridge and Knoxville TV stations early next week.
10. Adjournment. The meeting adjourned at 3:45, followed by a dry run for the Annual Meeting.
Mary Helen Rose, CORRE Secretary
