Coalition of Oak Ridge Retired Employees Minutes of Board Meeting on February 16, 2005 2:00 p.m. Oak Ridge Senior Center : Mike Bradshaw, Ken Cowser, Joe Dykstra, Dean Eyman, Ben Gaylor, Ben Johnson, Bob Keil, Charlie Kuykendall, Marigrace Kirstowsky, Mary Helen Rose, Troy Trotter, Don Wood, Bob Worrell Opening Remarks. Past President Charlie Kuykendall presided, in the absence of both Dave Reichle and Joe Setaro. Secretary & Treasurer’s Report. Mary Helen Rose highlighted her Treasurer’s report for January, copies of which had been distributed to board members. Balance on hand January 31, 2005, was $46,746.08, with a total of about 2,384 Active Members (49 new in January). She distributed copies of bio-sketches for Mike Bradshaw and Dean Eyman, who were appointed to the board in January. Kuykendall asked whether anyone objected to our putting all of the biographical sketches of board members on the Website. No one objected. Communications. Sandy Dean was absent due to vertigo (resulting from severe allergies). She had reported to Mary Helen that her last submission has been received by the editor of BWXT Y-12 Retiree News, who indicated that they could use all of the write-up. Kuykendall proposed that a monthly newsletter be written for our Website. Meetings at PACE Union Hall. Ben Gaylor reported on meetings held at the union hall with staff members from Representative Duncan’s and Senator Frist’s offices. He said a variety of issues were discussed, including CORRE’s request for a general increase and extending the 2% spousal reduction benefit to retirees. Legislative Committee. Dean Eyman reported that he and others met with Representative Duncan and his Legislative Director, Dean Rice. They talked about introducing legislation, which was strongly discouraged, since it would take possibly ten years for it to work, if ever. Also, it was felt that contractors at other DOE sites would probably oppose it. Also discussed was the possibility of taking a case to the Department of Labor. Rep. Duncan felt that it might be productive for us to visit the staffs of Tennessee delegates, or to write a letter to Tennessee delegates briefly making one or two points. Rice agreed that he would work with us in a joint meeting of congressional staff to finalize a letter. Ken Cowser stated that several of our board members believe that we need to have a renewed legislative strategy, which "pushes the marbles up hill," so to speak. We need to figure out a way to get Sen. Alexander to help us more. Bob Worrell agreed to get the latest figures on the pension fund surplus. Website. John Gray was absent, but Kuykendall talked about the website and asked for suggestions as to who we might get to assist Gray. Adjournment. The meeting adjourned at 3:05 p.m. Mary Helen Rose, CORRE Secretary |
