President Dave Reichle reported that he and others will brief Jeff Wadsworth at ORNL on June 7. Bob Worrell has not as yet been able to schedule a briefing for Dennis Ruddy at Y−12. Reichle has talked to Gerald Boyd (DOE-ORO) and told him we want to brief him after our briefings at ORNL and Y−12. He has also seen Rep. Zach Wamp and told him of our preparations and that we will be back to see him. Secretary & Treasurer’s Report. Mary Helen Rose highlighted her Treasurer’s report, copies of which had been distributed to board members. Balance on hand April 30, 2004, was $45,545.76, with a total of about 2,184 Active Members. Mary Helen displayed copies of a "thank-you note" that is now being sent to new Active Members. She stated that the Executive Committee has authorized her to put $40,000 of our funds in 5-year CDs at ORNL-FCU, where we can earn nearly 4% interest, with a double-play feature. Communications. Sandy Dean talked about plans for our annual meeting. We have requested use of the Oak Ridge High School auditorium on Friday, October 29, when the school is closed for the state teachers meeting. Scheduling of the auditorium is in progress, with requests being considered as they are received. Another possible date would be a Saturday in October when there is no UT ballgame. Sandy has submitted an article for the next publication in the Newsletter. June 16 is the next due date for material. She asked for ideas for articles, and there was discussion as to what would be acceptable to the editors. She has made contact with Pam Wilkinson about data that has been distributed before on money spent by retirees in different counties. Website. John Roy Gray reported that the website is up to date. He is still forwarding inquiries from retirees to Reichle for response. Member Data Base. Tom Lemons stated that Mary Helen Rose gave him disks containing two member lists, and he has converted the first one (about 1,000 names) to Excel. John Gray is going to show him an easier way to convert the second list. He said we have a partial data base that could be used for mailings. ORNL Benefits Advisory Group. Joe Setaro met with the group on Monday at ORNL and was given the last two reports showing a comparison of benefits between ORNL and 15 other institutions. Setaro is going through the reports to see where we stand on various aspects. ORNL is looking at use of fringe benefits as a recruiting tool, with medical benefits being first priority and pensions being second. Legislative Committee (Pete Lotts, Chairman; Ken Cowser, Kaye Johnson, John Jones, and Bob Keil; Dave Reichle and Joe Setaro, ex officio). Lotts reported that everything is on target for presentations at ORNL, Y−12, and ORO. In July, a program will get underway to contact legislative people. He asked members of the board to volunteer to make contacts with state senators and members of city and county governments in the area. Board members reviewed copies of the slide presentation that the committee has been working on and made a few changes. Lotts appointed John Jones, Troy Trotter, Charlie Kuykendall, and Bill Wilcox (Jones as chair) to prepare a table showing how distribution of a 17% ad hoc increase might be made. This table will be needed in about a week for the presentation. New Business. Bill Wilcox commented further on the proposed 17% increase. (For the record, after Wilcox’s presentation at a board work session on April 28, a motion was made and seconded to change the 2004 Position Paper to ask for 15% rather than 17%. An e-mail poll of the rest of the board was made following that meeting, but the motion failed, and some of those who had earlier supported the motion changed their minds. Dave Reichle later announced an executive decision to keep the proposed increase at 17%, and the Legislative Committee’s presentation will reflect that.) Adjournment. The meeting was adjourned at 3:25 p.m. Mary Helen Rose, Board Secretary |
