Minutes of Board Meeting on November 15, 2006, 2:00 p.m. Oak Ridge Senior Center Present: Mike Bradshaw, Sandy Dean, Bob Henderson, Keith Kibbe, Charlie Kuykendall, Tom Lemons, Pete Lotts, Ed Mee, Ken Moore, Tom Moser, Pete Peterson, Dave Reichle, Mary Helen Rose, Joe Setaro, Fred Shull, Troy Trotter, Harriett Westmoreland, Don Wood, Bob Worrell, Paula Wright 1. Opening Remarks. President Dave Reichle stated that he was happy to be back. He expressed appreciation to Bob Keil for chairing two meetings, and to Joe Setaro who handled other matters. (Bob Keil was absent due to having knee replacement surgery a few days ago. He was reported to be home from the hospital since Sunday, and is having home health workers and therapists come to his home for the next month.) 2. Report on Meeting November 7 at BWXT Y-12. Bob Worrell reported on the meeting which he, Joe Setaro, and Dave Reichle attended. He said this was our regular quarterly meeting with Mark Keck (who essentially replaced Norm Sparks) and Maureen Williams, who works for Keck. They have just received the Towers Perrin actuarial report and did not have any numbers that we want to get regarding 2005, but Worrell expects to get the numbers from them. Assets have increased recently because of the stock market, and he expects the numbers to be very favorable. Regarding what is going to happen with the 28 percent subsidy from Medicare, Worrell said they were told that DOE is going to keep the money. Pete Lotts and Worrell will draft a letter of protest to DOE (motion passed at October meeting that CORRE send such a letter). Tom Moser (new Board member and retiree from Bechtel Jacobs) questioned Worrell as to how Bechtel Jacobs pension issues were handled at such meetings. Worrell stated that Bechtel Jacobs pensions were not discussed at meetings with BWXT, since they were not included in the Pension Trust Fund administered by BWXT. However, Worrell, Setaro, and Reichle assured Moser that they advocated for equal treatment of Bechtel Jacobs and Wackenhut retirees when they met with legislators or members of their staff. Reichle urged Moser and Pete Peterson (also a Bechtel Jacobs retiree) to work together to try to establish contacts at Bechtel Jacobs. It was noted that the 2% spousal option reduction was not achieved for Bechtel Jacobs employees in a recent union settlement. 3. Secretary/Treasurer’s Report. Mary Helen Rose had no Treasurer’s Report since the monthly statement from ORNL-FCU has not been received. She will distributed copies of a report by e-mail as soon as possible. 4. Appointment of New Board Member/Treasurer. Bob Worrell, Chair of the Nominating Committee, moved to appoint Paula Wright to the Board effective immediately, and to appoint her as Treasurer effective January 1, 2007 (Mary Helen Rose will continue as Secretary). Motion carried unanimously. 5. Communications. Sandy Dean highlighted the article by Joanne Gailor, which appeared as a Guest Column in The Oak Ridger November 14, and copies were distributed to Board members. She does not know when Retirement News will be published again, hopefully soon. 6. ORNL Benefits Advisory Committee. Fred Shull reported that the Committee meeting scheduled for next week has been cancelled, probably due to the Thanksgiving Holiday. He said he helped “man” a booth at the recent Wellness Conference held at ORNL and talked to several interested people about the Advisory Committee and CORRE. He said his request to get current information on the distribution of numbers of retirees and surviving spouses has been approved and is working. 7. Legislative Committee. Pete Lotts reported Committee members have been pretty active in the last month trying to get statements out of folks, and we finally got a statement from Bob Corker, candidate for U.S. Senate. We have the promise of a meeting with Corker within the first six months of his term, but hope it will be sooner. Lotts, Dave Reichle, Joe Setaro, and Keith Kibbe had a teleconference with Tom Craig of Senator Alexander’s Washington staff this week, and he was very encouraging to us. Lotts said we need to continue the campaign to be in touch with legislators. Dave Reichle will discuss with Congressman Wamp’s staff where we stand, and will also work with Beth Hickman of Congressman Davis’ office to see how we can approach Democrats in Congress. 8. Adjournment. The meeting adjourned at 3:15 p.m. Mary Helen Rose, CORRE Secretary
