Coalition of Oak Ridge Retired Employees
Minutes of Board Meeting on June 21, 2006, 2:00 p.m.
Oak Ridge Senior Center

Present:   Present:   Mike Bradshaw, Joe Dykstra, Bob Henderson, Bob Keil, Charlie Kuykendall, Tom Lemons, Pete Lotts, Dave Reichle, Mary Helen Rose, Joe Setaro, Troy Trotter, Don Wood, Bob Worrell.

1. Opening Remarks.  President Dave Reichle noted that a DOE Public Meeting will be held at 5:30-7:00 tomorrow evening on the Hardin Valley Pellissippi State campus for public input on DOE Notice 351.1, which deals with pension plan and medical changes by DOE.  He said that, at the request of New Mexico Senators Domenici and Bingaman, DOE has postponed implementation of the policy for a year to get stakeholder input.  Copies of Secretary Bodman’s letter to Sen. Domenici announcing the postponement were distributed.  Reichle stated that Congressman Wamp’s office brought about this public meeting.  Postcards have been sent to all CORRE Active Members announcing the meeting, so that a large crowd is expected.

Reichle stated that we will put on the agenda for our July board meeting discussion of CORRE’s position on ORNL’s hidden agenda to split the MEPP fund, and take a vote.

2. Secretary/Treasurer’s Report.  Mary Helen Rose highlighted her Treasurer’s report for May, copies of which had been distributed to board members.  Balance as of May 31, 2006, was $40,745.15, with a total of about 2,662 Active Members.

3. Communications.  In Sandy Dean’s absence, Mary Helen reported on CORRE’s participation in the Secret City Festival.  There were ten persons who signed up as Active Members at the Festival.  Others who stopped by the booth were already Active Members.  Handouts were copies of the May 2005 CORRE Newsletter, the 2006 Position Paper, notices of the June 22 DOE Public Meeting, and Membership forms/cards.

4. ORNL Benefits Advisory Committee.  No report as Fred Shull was absent.  The Committee is to meet on Monday, June 26, 2006.

5. Legislative Committee.   Pete Lotts stated that Congressman Wamp had put in the DOE Authorizations Bill a restriction that funds could not be used to implement DOE 351.1.   The Bill has passed the House and has gone to the Senate.   All of Tennessee’s Representatives except Cooper voted for the Bill.  Lotts said that Congressman Wamp’s office set up the DOE Public meeting.

Regarding candidates, Lotts and Peterson met with Ed Bryant, who says he will work for us.  Pete Peterson needs to get in touch with Bob Corker.  The Committee tentatively has a meeting with Harold Ford August 1 or 2.  Lotts said we will try to broaden who we are contacting in terms of senators and representatives in other states.

6. Questions for DOE June 22 Public Meeting.  Joe Setaro was asked to combine lists submitted by Reichle and Lotts and forward to Board members before the meeting.  The questions may be asked by any Board member who can get the floor at the meeting.

7. Suggestions for Possible Revisions to DOE N 351.1.  Pete Lotts distributed copies of his draft of proposed revisions.   He will finalize the list and attempt to submit it to DOE officials at the public meeting, with a follow up formal transmittal.

8. Summer Annual Meeting.  It was decided to have our meeting in July (rather than in October as we have been doing),  and invite candidates to speak.  Mary Helen Rose was asked to check various dates with ORHS, and found that band camps would prevent our use of the auditorium in July.  She was asked to check Oak Ridge Mall and later confirmed a reservation to have our Annual Meeting in the Crown Court meeting room at the Mall on Wednesday, July 19, at 2:00 p.m.  The room there will seat 750 people, with possible standing room.   Postcards will be sent to Active Members.

9. Adjournment.  The meeting adjourned at 3.50 p.m.
