Coalition of Oak Ridge Retired Employees
Minutes of Board Meeting on May 17, 2006, 2:00 p.m. Oak Ridge Senior Center Present: Mike Bradshaw, Sandy Dean, Bob Henderson, Fred Jones, Bob Keil, Charlie Kuykendall, Tom Lemons, Pete Lotts, Pete Peterson, Dave Reichle, Mary Helen Rose, Joe Setaro, Fred Shull, Troy Trotter, Don Wood, Bob Worrell. 1. Opening Remarks. President Dave Reichle stated that DOE Notice 351.1 hit the streets at the end of April and changed everything, though a number of people in Human Resources fields have said that nothing has really changed. He noted that he got a press release out, which was approved by the CORRE Executive Committee. He thought Frank Munger’s article did us well. There was an article in the Tri-City Herald in Hanford. Reichle has been contacted by Myron Styran of Brookhaven, who wants to exchange information with CORRE. Reichle learned that there is a class action law suit at Los Alamos, and he asked Don Wood to check that out. The Oak Ridge Secret City Festival is scheduled for June 16-17, and the Board decided that CORRE will have a booth this time. Reichle appointed a committee of Sandy Dean (Chair), Bob Keil, Charlie Kuykendall, Mary Helen Rose, and Troy Trotter to plan our display and schedule workers. Emphasis will be on getting new members. 2. Secretary/Treasurer’s Report. Mary Helen Rose highlighted her Treasurer’s report for April, copies of which had been distributed to board members. Balance as of April 30, 2006, was $40,522.33, with a total of about 2,648 Active Members. 3. Nominating Committee. Motion passed to approve appointment of Barbara Arrington as an Advisor, if she will accept. Bob Worrell stated that Dennis Pennington, president of the Steel Workers Union, wants to recommend a replacement for Ben Gaylor, who has resigned from the Board to due health problems. Mike Bradshaw emphasized again that IGUA is a strong union, and motion passed that we appoint a member of IGUA as Advisor. The Nominating Committee will get names from both unions. 4. Report on Meeting at ORNL May 8. Charlie Kuykendall reported that he and Dave Reichle met on May 8 with Jim Roberto and Jeff Smith, Deputy Directors of ORNL, who said they had no advance warning on the DOE Notice, but acted like they would be adversely affected. Kuykendall and Reichle offered that CORRE could partner with ORNL and their actuarial consultants to try to develop a plan to send to DOE, but got no response. They came away feeling that they had an unproductive hour with Roberto and Smith. 5. Communications. Sandy Dean noted that Reichle has already reported on recent press coverage. She was dismayed that Retiree News edited out most of her last submission. It was decided that Kuykendall will try to arrange for a meeting with the manager of the publication to try to clarify their policy as to what they will include in CORRE Corner. 6. ORNL Benefits Advisory Committee. Fred Shull said the Commitee met on Monday, and that the big topic was the new DOE policy. ORNL is trying to get some answers from DOE-HQ. They were surprised at the time table, but are far enough along in their planning that they feel they could implement the program by March 1, 2007. All current employees could stay in the Defined Benefit Plan, or could choose to go to the Defined Contribution Plan. By May 31, the contractors have to send their estimate of the impact. 7. Legislative Committee. Lotts stated that the Committee is waiting on conversations with Helen Hardin as to where Congressman Wamp is going with his support. The 351.1 situation has shaken everything. We need to have a meeting with Senator Alexander and get him activated. Members of the committee are working with staff of senatorial candidates, and are going to try to have meetings with the candidates. Lotts said we need to update our presentation. He will ask Joe Setaro to supply data, which he can put in Powerpoint. 8. Annual Meeting. Reichle noted that we learned that the ORHS Auditorium will not be available from May 1 until January 1, because of renovation. Other possible meeting places were discussed. (Mary Helen later checked and found that the Crown Court room at the Oak Ridge Mall will seat 750 people and will cost $800, so that is probably our best option.) Reichle will continue to try to schedule Congressman Wamp to come and speak. 9. Adjournment. The meeting adjourned at 4:10 p.m. Mary Helen Rose, CORRE
