Coalition of Oak Ridge Retired Employees
Minutes of Board Meeting on April 19, 2006, 2:00 p.m. Oak Ridge Senior Center Present: Mike Bradshaw, Bob Henderson, Charlie Kuykendall, Tom Lemons, Pete Lotts, Ed Mee, Ken Moore, Pete Peterson, Dave Reichle, Mary Helen Rose, Joe Setaro, Fred Shull, Troy Trotter, Don Wood, Bob Worrell. 1. Opening Remarks. President Dave Reichle commented on the 10 statements of support that we earlier received from area governments. He said that Joe Setaro got a member of the Anderson County School Board to send a letter to Wamp in support of our efforts. Reichle and Bob Worrell had a meeting April 10 with the new BWXT Y-12 President and Manager, George Dial. They reported that he was very receptive and pleasant, and spent an hour with them. They gave him a briefing cook and talked about reasons for organizing CORRE. It was a very good meeting. Reichle reported that he, Fred Shull, and Bob Worrell participated in a call-in panel discussion at Cable TV Channel 12 on March 30. He reported further that he got an e-mail from Myron Stronger regarding a retiree organization at Brookhaven National Laboratory, where they have a defined contribution plan. Reichle agreed that our organization and theirs could share information. A conference call is scheduled for tomorrow at 11:00 with Helen Hardin of Congressman Wamp’s Washington office to explore next steps and whether Wamp can come to a CORRE Town Meeting sometime in the summer. Dave Reichle and Charlie Kuykendall will meet on May 8 with Jim Roberto and Jeff Smith at ORNL. Reichle and Bob Worrell had two meetings at Y-12, one with Susan Alexander, who is retiring as HR head; and one with her successor, Mark Keck. Keck has been there in another position for 23 years, but is just learning about the pension plan. We were very pleased with the way he received us. He wants to meet with us on a regular basis, perhaps every two months. Worrell said the trust fund topped $3 billion yesterday. He thinks that Keck will be a good contact with the BWXT Benefits Office. Worrell will send information to Pete Lotts, who will update the chart on the Pension Trust Fund. 2. Secretary/Treasurer’s Report. Mary Helen Rose highlighted her Treasurer’s report for March, copies of which had been distributed to board members. Balance as of March 31, 2006, was $40,398.84, with a total of about 2,648 Active Members. 3. Communications. In Sandy Dean’s absence, Reichle reported that a communication was received from a substitute editor of Retirement News. Reichle talked to Dean, who forwarded our earlier submission to the substitute. Presumably a newsletter will be issued soon. 4. ORNL Benefits Advisory Committee. Fred Shull has replaced Joe Setaro, and reported that he attended his first meeting as a member of the committee on April 17. Discussion at the meeting was mostly about employee issues, but it was reported that 1,200 retirees have signed up for the dental/vision plan (more than the hoped-for 1,000). Reichle expressed appreciation to Joe Setaro for his years of service on the Committee. 5. Legislative Committee. Lotts stated that the Committee is still mostly in a holding pattern. As to Senatorial contacts, no significant contacts have been made with offices of Senators Alexander and Frist for the past month. We need to have more discussions with staff of senatorial candidate Harold Ford. Also, we have been in touch with staff or senatorial candidates Corker and Bryant. Lotts said we are now mostly waiting to hear from Congressman Wamps’s office. 6. Possible Summer Annual Meeting. Reichle noted that we have talked about a possible summer meeting in a somewhat different format than the annual meetings we have held in the fall. We can schedule the ORHS auditorium when school is not in session during the summer. Reichle will pursue getting Congressman Wamp’s office to set a date for him to come. If that doesn’t work out, we will schedule a date for the meeting and see what other national or state legislative people we can get to participate. 7. Wackenhut & Bechtel Jacobs Pension Funds. Fred Shull noted that we have a table in the overhead presentation that looks at assets and liabilities for active and retired employees of ORNL and Y-12, and he, Mike Bradshaw, and Teresa Riggs set out to get the same information on the Bechtel Jacobs and Wackenhut pension funds. Bradshaw got good information from Wackenhut, and Riggs has made the request to the HR office at Bechtel Jacobs but has no response yet. Riggs is out of town. Shull said our pension fund is funded at 129.2%, Wackenhut’s is at 125%, and Bechtel-Jacobs is at 99.1%. Bechtel Jacobs has contributed to the fund. Shull said that Mary Helen has agreed to type the spread sheets, which will be distributed later. 8. Adjournment. The meeting adjourned at 3:50 p.m. Mary Helen Rose, CORRE Secretary
