| Ford Statement concerning
the Pension September 29, 2006 |
From: "Robert Sepucha" <rsepucha@haroldfordjr.com> To: <allotts@tds.net> Cc: "Robert Sepucha" <rsepucha@fordfortennessee.com> Sent: Friday, September 29, 2006 11:26 PM Subject: Harold Ford Statement Pete, sorry again for the delay. Here is Congressman Ford's statement in support of CORRE: "I am concerned that the federal government may not be living up to its promises to retirees from Department of Energy contractors in Oak Ridge. The average pension of an Oak Ridge DOE contractor retiree is worth less than 50 percent of its original value, and the Department of Energy thus far has failed to adjust these workers' pensions. This is not the way America should be treating people who have contributed so much to the defense of the United States. "I strongly support fair and equitable treatment of retirees in the administration of the DOE Contractor Retirement Trust funds. That includes the continuance of adjustments - as has been the practice of Oak Ridge contractors in the past - to partially compensate for losses in pension values due to inflation. I support an adjustment as requested by the Coalition of Oak Ridge Retired Employees, as there is more than sufficient surplus in the fund to do this. I want to assure the retirees and their families that I stand with them in their need as Congressman. And, if the people of Tennessee do me the honor of electing me to the Senate, I will work with the retirees of Oak Ridge contractors to help them get the assistance deserve."
